PALESTINE IS STILL THE
ISSUE (2002, 53 mins)
Tuesday, May 13 at
7:00pm
In this
in-depth documentary, John Pilger asks why the Palestinians, whose
right of return was affirmed by the United Nations more than half a
century ago, are still caught in a terrible limbo -- refugees in their
own land, controlled by Israel in the longest military occupation in
modern times. In a series of extraordinary interviews with both
Palestinians and Israelis, Pilger weaves together the issue of
Palestine. Continually asking for the solution, John Pilger says it is
time to bring justice, as well as peace, to Palestine.
Followed by a discussion with Ed Mast
IN SEARCH OF
PALESTINE (1998, 52 mins)
Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 pm
Examines the painful history of Palestinians, as well as contemporary
realities on the ground at the end of the Oslo process, through Edward
Said’s reflections on traveling to Israel and Palestine. The
experience leads to his articulation of a prescient view of the
limitations and insufficiencies of Oslo, shortly before the
re-ignition of the intifada.
Followed by a discussion with Abed Quttayneh, a Palestinian refugee
SONG ON A
NARROW PATH (2001, 52 mins)
Tuesday,
May 20 at 7:00pm
A portrait of
Jerusalem, through the lives of three people who embody the city: Reem,
an artist, Ali, an African-palestinian political prisoner, and Farouq,
who lives on the memories of a glorious past. For them, Jerusalem is a
dream that troubles the mind and spirit, between the recurring
violence and simple survival. (Seattle Premiere, Awards: Torino 2001,
Lussas 2001, Nyon 2001)
Followed by a discussion with Leila Souidan, peace activist
JEREMY HARDY VS.
THE ISRAELI ARMY (2002, 52 mins)
Thursday, May 22 at 7:00pm
British
comedian Jeremy Hardy makes a rash decision to travel to Palestine in
March 2002 just before the invasion of Bethlehem and the siege of the
Nativity Church. He joins a campaign to protect Palestinian farmers
against the hostility of settlers but finds himself caught up in the
events of the invasion. He decides to return later, but this time - in
a manner of speaking - to take on the Israeli army.
Followed by a discussion with Linda Bevis and Atifeh Naeemi (just back
from a campaign with the Int'l Solidarity Movement)
AFTER JENIN (2002, 50 mins)
Tuesday,
May 27 at 7:00pm
The film
centers around Jenin, Nablus and other towns in the West Bank, which
were brutally occupied by Israeli forces for one month in early 2002.
The footage began in April, 2002 - immediately after the first
withdrawal of Israeli invaders where they left death, anger and
destruction behind. A main theme throughout the documentary is the
Palestinian spirit, that remains strong, undefeated and unshaken.
Followed by a discussion with Ramzy Baroud, author of "Searching Jenin"
STAYING ALIVE (2001, 28 mins)
Thursday, May 29 at 7:00pm
An examination of the motives of Palestinian youths who risk their
lives to throw stones at Israeli soldiers. Why don't they fear death
or injury? How aware are they of what is happening around them? What
political thoughts drive them to go and possibly fight to their
deaths? (Seattle Premiere)
Followed by a discussion with Ramzy Baroud
